Meet the Head Girl

Head Girl acceptance speech:

Thank you, thank you, thank you times a trillion from the deepest, deepest, deepest part of my heart for choosing me, Zainab Gill as your head girl for St.Martins-in-the-fields High School for Girls 2016 to 2017.

I remember it as though it were yesterday...
The little Zainab Gill in year 7 with the backpack bigger than her, full heavy with massive school bricks for books, would glare at the giant board which stood exactly here in this hall. She'd dream about one day becoming one of these many names on this list of students who were inspirational young women. However, she doubted herself and said, "I will never be able to make it up there". And so her mother standing beside her said, "Don't say you'll never be up there. If you work hard and try your hardest in everything you do and constantly pray to God who helps to support your dreams and helps you in every moment of your life, you will be rewarded with good things from him".

And so my mother became the number one supporter of my dreams and I became determined and thirsty to make her proud of me and my step-father who said, "Zainab, never sell yourself short". I attended many activities, tried to help my wider community and more importantly, finally agreed to learn how to cook to please my mother and step-father.

As time progressed, through all the ups and downs I faced during my time at school, many more amazing individuals both students, teachers, friends and family helped to support this dream of becoming head girl which has now allowed me to become an inspirational role model for all the girls of our school but also my 7 brothers and sisters. These amazing individuals are people who have been loyal to me since the beginning and supported me in every dream since I was the small, tiny St. Martins girl who not many people noticed because of her tiny height.

However, this short girl now apparently has a lot to offer to this wonderful school. I can truly say that St. Martin's has made me the person I am today who is courageous, outspoken and determined to make a positive impact on the world but firstly her school. I would like to say a huge thanks to all those who voted for me and supported me through this journey; and especially Mrs. Stanislaus, Ms. Poole and Mrs. Wilson for choosing me as head girl.

And as the person you chose as your head girl, I will ensure that with my fellow amazingly wonderful leadership team and I will allow you the girls of St. Martinís voices to be heard to make our school a better place in which we show our love for learning.

My final message to all of you, is that your dreams can be achieved if you work hard to accomplish them. Do not let anyone else tell you otherwise no matter your background, faith or dream, because you are a St. Martins girl and you are phenomenal women of the future.

With the love of learning,

Your 2016-2017 Head Girl,

Zainab Gill 11A
