Year 7 go to Kew!

Back to Latest News

On Friday, 20 October, the whole of Year 7 went on a trip to Kew Gardens to take part in a special Glaxo Smith Kline “Plants in Forensics and Medicine” workshop.

Students learnt about the Forensics and Verification work carried out at Kew Gardens. They learnt about how plant pollen grains were used by Forensic Scientists and had the opportunity to carry out “detective” work to confirm the ingredients in a range of honey products. They then learnt about plants in medicinal products and used their knowledge to determine which plants would be best to use for specific illnesses.

This was a busy trip with many activities to complete. The staff at Kew were impressed with the plant biology knowledge our students already had, and the students felt they gained further knowledge about plant use in forensics and medicine. We enjoyed visiting the world famous conservatories, and are keen to return to Kew in the summer for a picnic and to visit the other attractions we ran out of time to see!
