Fire of London

The City of London this year is organising a major celebration of the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire in September. As part of this, the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers of London is planning to pair 10 glass artists with 10 schools to design and make a piece of glass. We were very fortunate to be chosen as one of the schools to take part in this project.

A group of year 9 students worked with an artist who was a specialist glass artist. She transformed their designs into delicate pieces of painted glass forming a larger glass sculpture.  All the work will be exhibited at the Church of St Stephen Walbrook in the city on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September (the First day of the Great Fire).  From the 3rd to 29th September all the glass work will be moved to Hatfield House where it will be exhibited to the public.

At some point, the glass sculpture will be given to us to keep, we look forward to this! Well done to the students involved. The Master of the Glass Sellers' Company, William Knocker, says "We looked for an original way for glass to celebrate this great historical event. As our contribution to the City of London celebrations, the project has delivered all we wanted and more, creating an exciting opportunity for cross-curricular exploration between humanities and art in the participating schools."

The ten works are also being judged, with the winning school, teacher, pupils and artist receiving a glass work made especially by Andreya Bennett. The winner will be announced at a reception in the Church on the evening of Thursday 1st September. The judges are Katharine Coleman MBE (glass engraver and Liveryman), Neil Hughes (Managing Director of Dartington Crystal) and Maria Chanmugam (Liveryman and Trustee of the Glass Sellers' charity).
