Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Nelson Mandela's birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010. The Mandela Day website is dedicated to the cause of active citizenship and leadership to help address the world’s injustices. The essence of Mandela Day is ‘Take action, inspire change, and make every day a Mandela Day. In London’s Hyde Park, on his 90th birthday, Nelson Mandela announced this idea saying “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. Now it's over to you.  Nelson Mandela said “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is your hands now.”  You can do this by signing up to the National Citizen Service to be a volunteer.  If you are in Year 11 or 12 you are being called to take action in your community, to inspire change and make every day a 'Mandela Day' this summer.
