On 16 January, Year 8 and 9 students celebrated 2018 as the Year of the Engineer at the Farringdon Crossrail site in the presence of Ms Nusrat Ghani, a government minister. Ms Ghani, who is Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, was there to promote young people entering engineering careers and apprenticeships.  This event was part of a year-long campaign to tackle the engineering skills gap and widen the pool of young people who join the profession.

Students were given exclusive access to the Crossrail site which included a tour by the site manager, Andy Scholes.  They were able to see construction works taking place and had the opportunity to meet and talk to a range of engineers from a number of disciplines who were working on the project.

"The trip allowed our girls to see engineering in practice and therefore envisage themselves in such roles.  Many of them have been so inspired that they have begun to explore the many different opportunities in engineering."
