Tech in the City

On the 27th of November, a group of Year 10 students were accompanied by Mlle Bajer to a Tech in the City workshop organised by the Brokerage. This workshop was held at the Allen and Overy law firm where we explored the different uses of technology throughout a variety of jobs, and its growth in how often it is used. We were given the opportunity to attempt to solve different scenarios that would have to be dealt with in the real world of work and discovered what set of skills were needed in order to adapt to specific areas of work.

During this workshop, we had the opportunity to have a Q&A session with some of the employees at Allen and Overy, who told us about their life, area of work and who were able to relate to our ages and backgrounds through their prior experiences. We were informed of the possible issues at work that must be dealt with on a day to day basis, such as that of financial causes. It was to this activity that Tasmine (10M) said that meeting these people was “a great experience”. We had the chance to talk to each individual, who spoke to us from various perspectives depending on their field of work, and some of us had come across job titles that we had no idea they existed until this visit.

We were then given tasks that involved a company/app named Bopify. We were provided with some information about the app and, from that, we had to think in our groups of an idea to improve the app. The groups then presented their ideas and the winner was announced at the end. From the programme provider’s feedback, we were able to analyse how we could improve our presentations and the reasons why the winning team was stronger, amongst which their detailed and extended introduction and great use of statistics.

All the students who attended this workshop had an amazing time and they all had something to take away from the trip. Charlotte in 10M said “it was a lovely experience because I learned a lot of things that I could use for my future career. By the end of the workshop I knew many things I had not known at the beginning”.
