How to find an apprenticeship
Apprenticeships can be a great way to kickstart your career, and secure your dream job. But with so many out there, that's often easier said than done. Here are five steps that can help you narrow down the options.

Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) helps students gain the skills and knowledge needed for their future career choices. Good quality careers education will raise the aspirations of all young people. It will increase motivation by linking activities in school with preparation for life post 16 and post 18. Careers Education will contribute to raising student achievement, help them to focus on their longer term career ambitions, and and through our entitlement programme, ensure an equality of opportunity for all.
Our Careers programme supports students, guiding and providing them with the knowledge they need for the world of work. We have called this the Steps to Success Programme. We were proud to complete stage 2 of the Investors in Careers (IiC) Award in January 2018, and after a rigorous assessment, achieved full Investors in Careers status in December 2018. The Investors in Careers Award is a quality standard for the management of careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG). It recognises our commitment to providing an impartial CEIAG programme which contributes to our whole school aims and objectives, as well as meeting the statutory guidance.

STEPS TO SUCCESS PROGRAMME
St Martin’s is committed to developing the whole individual and sees investing in Careers as essential to achieve this. From Year 7 through to Year 13, students follow a comprehensive careers programme called 'Steps to Success', which enables them to develop the skills and attributes required for the world of work.
The Steps to Success programme is about inspiring the young women of tomorrow and creating:

The programme is differentiated and personalised to ensure progression through activities that are appropriate to students’ stages of career, learning planning and development. All students from Years 8-11 are entitled to CEIAG which meets professional standards of practice and which is impartial and confidential. It is integrated into the whole curriculum and is based on a partnership with student’s parents and carers. The programme aims to raise aspirations, challenge stereotyping and promote equality and diversity. The programme also equips them with the key skills, attitudes and qualities necessary to make a successful transition to adult and working life.

Sixth Form
At St Martin’s Sixth Form our students ‘Journey to Success’ will be paved with self-discovery. Our aim is to ensure that every student strives for excellence to fulfil their potential and reach their ambitions. Whatever pathway our students choose, we support them every step of the way, creating a tailored curriculum and experience to ensure that they succeed.
During our Stepping up Programme which takes place on a weekly basis, we prepare students for the next stages of their lives. We also provide:
- Access to a qualified careers adviser
- Visits to employers, careers events and university open days
- Industry specific talks with up to date labour market information
- Support seeking tailored work experience placement
- Tutorial programme with support on effective decisions, applications and transitions.
Work experience
We aim to ensure that all students leave our school equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in the world of work. With this in mind, we encourage students from Years 8-13 to identify, secure and complete a work experience placement per academic year. These placements are undertaken in the spring and summer term.
The ‘Year 7 and 8 Work Shadowing Day’ is a recent addition to our Steps to Success Programme and we hope that it gives students a real insight into working life and different transferable skills.
Provider Access statement
Additionally, as part of their entitlement, students have access to a range of external providers to ensure they learn about approved technical qualifications and apprenticeships.The Government introduced a new legal duty, from 2 January 2018, which requires all maintained schools and academies to ensure that there is an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access all students for the purpose of informing them about approved technical education qualifications and apprenticeships. Advice for Parents
The careers information we provide is to help both parents and students make fully informed choices at key stages. There are a growing number of alternative and changing progression routes for students to negotiate to achieve the best outcomes for themselves. It is also important to understand the changing labour market and the impact this may have on career choices.

The effectiveness of our careers education information and guidance will be reflected in the high numbers of students progressing to destinations such as apprenticeships, technical routes, sixth form colleges, further education colleges, universities or employment. Destination data is used to assess how successfully students make the transition into the next stage of education or training, or into employment and to inform future careers provision. The careers policy is reviewed on an annual basis by the Careers Leader, SLT and Governors.
