Today is Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday in the United States and a celebration of what Dr King did to bring about change. Dr King devoted his life to finding peaceful ways to have a fairer more just society and became the figure head for the civil rights movement. His words were always about equality which emphasised the golden rule: ‘to treat other people in the way in which we would want others to treat us.’ Inspired by his Christian faith, Martin Luther King was determined to show the world that everybody was equally loved and valued by God.
MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. It is as “a day on, not a day off,” And in the words of Martin Luther King, “everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”
Service is one of our school values and we work hard as a school community to live by this value and to follow God’s path. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28. In the words of Martin Luther King, "So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream."
